The International Conference “Universities and Cultural Routes” will take place for the first time in Santiago de Compostela on 13 and 14 November 2024, with the following mission:

    • To identify higher education institutions committed to preserve and strengthen cultural routes in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Americas.
    • To highlight and make visible the actions carried out to date by the different actors involved.
    • To draw up an action plan and common strategy for the 2024-2026 biennium.

If you are part of a network of universities, a university or an organisation focused on studies on cultural routes or have a particular interest in the research of the great Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, you are encouraged to apply for participation.

GUIDE FOR ELABORATION AND SUBMISSION OF COMMUNICATIONS

 

Type and perspective

All kinds of contributions and disciplinary perspectives are welcome: theoretical, state of the art research reports, case studies, policy evaluations or other perspectives related to aspects of Cultural Routes.

Contributions from Master’s and PhD students (dissertations, articles, theses, etc.) are particularly welcome.

Authors are invited to submit papers that have been published, not previously published, accepted to be published or under consideration for publication.

 

Topic

Papers shall focus on Cultural Routes, including (but not limited to) the following themes:

  • Cultural heritage (preservation, enhancement, interpretation, management, etc.).
  • Tourism (cultural tourism, sustainable tourism, slow tourism, tourism indicators andmeasurement, emerging trends, etc.).
  • Community participation (local communities’ engagement, grass-roots projects,ownership of heritage, etc.).
  • Local development (sustainable development, heritage and tourism as engines fordevelopment, etc.)
  • Emerging trends in the cultural, heritage and tourism sectors (use of virtual reality anddigital technologies, creativity and resilience, funding and finance for post-Covid recovery, etc.)

Preparation of proposals

  • Language: English, compulsory. Selected papers must be presented at the Conference in person and English only.
  • Authenticity of the work: Papers must be original and completed by Thursday 31 October 2024.
  • Abstract length: 300 words maximum.
  • Author biography lengh: 75 words maximum.
  • Minimum content of the abstract:
    • Title of the communication.
    • Name and surname of the author.
    • Afiliation (position, institution, country of the author).
    • Email of the author.
    • Addressed topic or problem.
    • Used methods/approaches.
    • Developed key arguments.
    • Author’s biography.
    • Type of research (e.g., peer-reviewed journal paper, conference paper, thesis work, publications, etc.).
    • Publication date.
  • Appearance and IT support of abstract:
    • Format: MS Word.docx
    • Font: Tahoma 10 points.
    • Spacing: single-space.
    • Paper size: DIN-A4.
    • Alignment: justified.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Cultural heritage of Santiago

The cultural programme of the International Conference “Universities and Cultural Routes” includes a guided tour of the rich and extensive heritage of Santiago.

Participants will have the opportunity to get a close-up look at all the details and appreciate the immeasurable value of the heritage of the city, the centres of interest in history and its most emblematic buildings.

The Camino de Santiago

Participants will also have the opportunity to walk a short section of the Portuguese Camino de Santiago, whose origins date back to the reign of Alfonso VI of Castile and Leon (1065-1109) and his daughters Urraca and Teresa, reaching our days as the second best known Jacobean itinerary at international level.

The academic activity of the 1st International Conference ‘Universities and Cultural Routes’ will take place at the Centre for Advanced Research Studies of the University of Santiago de Compostela, which is also so-called Edificio CIEDUS (Parque de Vista Alegre, rúa das Salvadas, s/n, 15705 Santiago de Compostela).
