History and objectives

The University of the East ‘UNIVO’ was founded on the initiative of professionals from San Miguel, on 30 October 1981, as a higher education alternative for the community of the eastern part of the country. It began its academic work on 3 February 1982, with 554 students enrolled.

UNIVO is a public utility corporation, secular, non-profit, which offers higher education services and is governed by the Law of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education of El Salvador, its regulations and other related laws, and may not intervene in religious or political activities of any kind.

Its basic functions are teaching, research and social projection.

Governing bodies

The Superior Organism, responsible for establishing the policies and norms of academic and administrative nature, are the General Assembly, the Board of Directors and the Academic Council. The latter is responsible for academic functions and is composed of the Rector, the Vice-rector, the Secretary General and the Deans.

In turn, the Officers direct and supervise academic and administrative tasks and ensure compliance with the laws, statutes and other regulations of the University. This body is composed of the President, the Vice-president, the Rector, the Vice-rector general, the Vice-rectors, the Secretary General and the Deans.

Grounds

The University has the Central Headquarters and Postgraduate School in San Miguel, the Experimental Centre in Anchico and the University City in Quelepa (San Miguel). All facilities are equipped with laboratories, libraries, green areas, sports areas, medical and psychological clinics, among others.

International Programmes

The Department of Internationalisation is in charge of the University’s international links. Thus it has established more than 50 active bilateral cooperation agreements with universities in other countries.

UNIVO is also part of regional cooperation networks such as the Union of Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean (UDUAL), the Association of Latin American and Caribbean Universities for Integration (AUALCPI), the Association of Private Universities of Central America (AUPRICA).

This international cooperation has led to academic and teaching mobility programmes, as well as teaching and research exchanges, participation in international student internships, among other initiatives.

Academic calendar

Its Academic activity is divided into semesters. The first semester begins in January and ends in mid-June, and the second semester begins at the end of July and ends in early December.

UNIVO has six academic faculties and 30 administrative departments.
