Thomas Buntru, the Director of International Programmes at the University of Monterrey (UDEM).

The selection committee highlights his profile as a “thought leader in global engagement, an outstanding scholar, passionate educator and an accomplished practitioner”.

The Institute of International Education announced on 14 February 2023 that one of its annual Senior International Officer (SIO) awards will go to Thomas Buntru, the Director of International Programmes at the University of Monterey (UDEM). This year, the selection committee determined that two outstanding leaders should receive it, so he shares the recognition with Ahmad Ezzeddine, Vice President for Academic Student Affairs and Global Engagement at Wayne State University.

In the web section of the award, the institute highlights Buntru’s “dedication and leadership in the internationalisation and global engagement at Universidad de Monterrey, his focus on mentorship and life-long learning, and his significant and innovative contributions to the field of international education”. It also considers him a “thought leader in global engagement, an outstanding scholar, passionate educator and an accomplished practitioner”.

About his leading figure, Francisco Marmolejo, Qatar Foundation Higher Education President, notes that Buntru is recognised worldwide not only as an “active and tireless promoter of international education in Mexico but also a key leader globally” through his roles in the Mexican Association for International Education and the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration.

The presentation ceremony will take place in Washington (USA) at the annual conference of the Association of International Education Administrators.
