María Teresa Carballeira being appointed as a Full Member of the Academia Xacobea.

On 24 January 2022, the Academia Xacobea held the solemn opening session of the academic year 2022 in which it proceeded to formalize the incorporation to the institution of the doctor and professor of the University of Santiago de Compostela and executive secretary of the CGU, María Teresa Carballeira as Full Academician. The academy moved to one of the most emblematic monuments of A Estrada, the Pazo de Oca, point of the Portuguese pilgrimage route to Compostela.

After the inauguration, María Teresa Carballeira gave her speech in which she addressed “The contribution of contemporary law to the St. James’ Way” examining the obstacles in terms of physical protection of the Camino, especially the degradation of its environment. At the same time, he stressed the importance of the well-being of the pilgrim and the protection of its current cultural contributions and the obligation to promote the tangible and intangible heritage of today’s pilgrims for future generations

Ulises Bértolo, secretary of the Academia Xacobea, highlighted the extensive career of María Teresa Carballeira as a jurist and specialist in the research of the Camino and invited her to continue with her vocation in this institution. In addition, he recalled the importance of the St. James’ Way as a historical element with deep spiritual roots and as a nexus for Europe.

The Academia Xacobea is a public, non-governmental and non-profit institution that regulates the creation and legal regime of the academies in the Autonomous Community of Galicia. Its main foundational purpose is the promotion and development of research, study and dissemination of the Way of St. James and the Xacobean phenomenon in all its aspects, as well as the promotion and dissemination of its universal values.
