The jury of the IV Research pitches contest of the Compostela Group of Universities awards the work of three scientists from the universities of Pécs and Coruña.
The members of the jury of the IV Research pitches contest of the Compostela Group of Universities have decided to award the first prize to the Dentistry student of the University of Pécs Benjámin Farkas. In his pitch Investigate the genetic background of autoimmune diseases, the future dentist explains the research he is doing on the genetic basis of Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a cancer of the white cells whose first symptoms can be identified in the oral cavity.
When evaluating his presentation, the members of the jury valued his “good structure and clear identification of a measurable goal”. In addition to its potential benefit to society, through the “improvement of the life quality of those who suffer from autoimmune diseases”, and to the research community, as they consider that it brings a “new approach” to the disease.
Regarding the second prize, it was awarded to the doctoral student of the University of A Coruña Jorge Salgado. This doctoral student is developing an eco-friendly alternative to polluting gases currently employed in cooling systems, as outlined in the pitch Solid state materials for ecologic refrigeration.
In its decision, the jury took into account his ability to adapt specific terminology to its area of research to a general audience and his contribution to the “development of environmentally friendly materials”, an issue that is “extremely important nowadays”.
Finally, the third prize went to the doctoral student of the University of Pécs Beatrix Bánkyné Perjés. In her pitch Effects of prenatal dance intervention on fetal neurodevelopment, this researcher details the impact of a special prenatal dance intervention on fetal neurodevelopment and puts forward her goal of integrating this method into prenatal care.
In their assessment, the members of the jury highlighted the innovative nature of the research and the good structure of its methodology.
